Nyterica Edget

Nyterica Edget, President

Nyterica Edget is a native of Grenada, MS. She chose to attend The University of Mississippi because it offered a loving, diverse atmosphere that felt like home. She obtained her bachelor’s in Exercise Science from the University of Mississippi in May 2018 and is actively pursuing a Masters in Higher Education/Student Personnel. Nyterica aspires to make her mark in the field of Higher Education through supporting incoming students. Nyterica enjoys being a part of the Black Graduate and Professional Student Association because it provides a community of support and network opportunities with people of shared identities. She also serves as a Graduate Assistant for the FASTrack Learning Community.  In her free time, she enjoys reading books in the grove, traveling and singing. 

 

Jordan Freeman

Jordan Freeman, Vice President

Jordan Freeman is a native of Greenwood, MS and he serves as the Vice President of BGPSA. He attended Mississippi Valley State University and graduated with a B.S. in Biology in May 2019. He is currently enrolled in the M.A. Higher Education/Student Personnel program and serves as a Graduate Assistant with The Office of Fraternal Leadership and Learning. He chose to attend the University of Mississippi because it would allow him to learn and develop through various challenging experiences. Also, he decided to join BGPSA because it will allow him to continue growing as a leader, and it will allow him to network with individuals working towards similar goals. 

 

Chibuihe Asonye

Chibuihe Asonye, Treasurer

Chibuihe Asonye (She/Her/Hers) is a native of Chicago, IL and will be serving as BGPSA’s Treasurer. She attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Earth, Society, and Environmental Sustainability in December 2018. Chibuihe is currently pursuing a Masters of Arts in Higher Education/ College Student Personnel and works as a Graduate Community Director in the Department of Student Housing. Chibuihe is excited to serve as the BGPSA Treasurer and hopes to use this opportunity to advocate for Black students on the graduate level. 

 

Damien Joiner

Damien Joiner, Public Relations & Marketing Chair

Damien Joiner is a native of Oxford, MS and he serves as the Public Relations & Marketing Chair of BGPSA. He attended The University of Mississippi and graduated with a B.A. in Human Resource Management in May of 2016. He is currently enrolled in the M.A. Higher Education/Student Personnel program and serves as a Graduate Assistant for the Center for Inclusion and Cross- Cultural Engagement.  He chose to continue his education here at UM because he believes it values the principles of student development, cultural growth, and fosters a welcoming environment. What he loves most about BGPSA is that it offers him networking opportunities while also being surrounded by people who look like him. It provides him with a space where he feels connected and engaged.

 

Advisors

Dr. EJ Edney

Dr. EJ Presley, Advisor

Dr. EJ Presley is a native of Crenshaw, MS. He obtained his Bachelors in Psychology and Masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling degrees from The University of Mississippi. Dr. Presley completed his Doctoral degree in Higher Education from the University of Mississippi in May 2019 as well. He currently serves as the Assistant Director of Career Development at The University of Mississippi’s Career Center.  He is responsible for the facilitation of career development initiatives as well as supervising the Career Advisors and practicum students of the Career Center. Dr. Presley is excited to assist students with career development, professionalism, and leadership development. 

What I enjoy the most about BGPSA?

I enjoy being able to interact with highly intelligent graduate students that share a common goal of providing professionalism, community service and fellowship to minority graduate students.  

 

Brittany Dawson

Brittany L. Dawson, Advisor

Brittany L. Dawson is a native of Alamo, Tennessee, but she calls Memphis, Tennessee home. She is a two-time graduate of THE University of Memphis; where she obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and African and African-American Studies and her Master of Science in Leadership and Policy Study with a concentration in Student Personnel. Brittany is new to The University of Mississippi and Oxford area. Brittany is the new Assistant Director for Conflict Resolution and Student Conduct. Brittany currently serves as the advisor of BGPSA and Phi Beta Lambda Business Fraternity.

Brittany is excited to serve as one of the advisors for BGPSA. She believes that this organization is needed for Black graduates as they too, need a space for belonging at this institution, but to also help one another continue to advance.  As a new professional herself, Brittany is excited to be able to help BGPSA members bridge the gap between graduate school and work life.
